Course Director, NVQ4 Arts Management Programme, Liverpool Centre of Arts Development, 2004 - 2005

This was the only course of its kind, developed specifically to train up the next generation of arts managers in time for Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008. Each six-month programme gave students the opportunity to achieve an NVQ Level 4 in Management, which was taught within a participatory arts context. In addition, each student undertook a significant placement with an arts and/or community organisation, where they worked in teams to manage the delivery of a participatory arts project.

Responsibilities included:
•  Recruited and managed all course tutors. Publicised course and recruited all students.
•  Devised and developed curriculum, policy and procedures, evalution of modules and course.
•  Taught course modules: Participatory Arts, Placement Preparation, Fund Raising, Monitoring & Evaluation.
•  Liased with internal and external assesors. Increased pass rate to 85%
•  Devised, organised and supervised high-quality placement projects with external partners, running over 4 months each and totalling 8 placement projects a year.
•  Mangaged and nurtured relationships with and between centre, staff, students and placements.
•  Overall financial responsibilty for all course costs.
•  Through careful management of recruitment, placements and curriculum, graduates have won entry level arts jobs at institutions including Tate Liveropool, Bluecoat Arts Centre, FACT, The St. Helens Citadel and Manchester City Council, as well as independent organisations and intiatives.

The highly successful placement system enabled partnership working with a range of quality organisations on Merseyside. With the extra capacity that our students and partnership gave them, organisations were able to undertake either an "extra" project, or continue with a current project.

Placements took place with a number of organisations, including:

•  Liverpool Biennial of Art
•  South Liverpool Housing Group
•  BBC Big Screen
•  Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
•  Williamsons Tunnels
•  The Bluecoat Arts Centre
•  Pidgin Productions
•  The Rotunda Adult Education Centre
•  Kensington Fields Community Centre
